The Practice of Ideation in the Creative Arts (QCA3570)

Black. Woman. Creative. Separately, these words mean different things, but together they create a whole new essence.

In this Digital Networking Story, I interviewed Janet Dandrige and Dr. Dominique Pritchett about their artistic process, how to continue building creativity, and the challenges they face in their careers.

Digital Networking Story

While working on this project, I developed the following skills:

  • Digital Interviews

  • Networking

  • Video Editing

  • Stock Footage

  • Research

  • Screenwriting

During this course, I was challenged with thinking innovatively about my future and what I hope to accomplish. This included being aware of the challenges I would face and how I could overcome them. Being new to my field at the time, I felt that the best way to learn was to learn from those who were already doing what I wanted to do. As such, I leveraged my network to interview two trailblazers in their respective fields.

Interviewing is an important skill, and asking great questions will generate even greater stories. After speaking to each interviewee individually, I reviewed my notes and observed the similarities in what they spoke about. This is where the story began to form. After drawing the connections, I developed a script that tied what Janet and Dr. Dominique shared to the research I conducted and recorded my voice-over. Since the only footage I had was the interview footage, I had to find stock videos online to fill the empty spaces. All of these elements came together beautifully to form an informational networking video on the challenges Black women face in the creative industries and how they overcome them.
